so i actually purchased legal music, and am being told by windows media player 11 that I don't have the Windows Media Audio 9 Standard (161) codec. following the windows web help screen I am taken to a codec download, none of which are for xp. I landed up installing wma player again, and it works. that is until the next day, when I get the same error all over again. this has also effect winamp, which will no longer player the purchased tracks. what is going on here? why is the codec suddenly don't present, and does not stay active when re installed?
any suggestions for staying legal with music greatfully received.

Go with Rhapsody.
You don't have to download anything on your harddrive except for the player engine and they have a great selection of music.

ahh of the top of my head try download a codec pack? just google for codec pack.
Or you could try to find a program that takes the drm stuff out of the songs, i can't think of one of the top of my head.

found the codec pact, its getting windows media to remember its there! this is very odd, installing the codec one day and then having windows media player forgetting its there the next day.

Windows Media? IMO, it's more a breach of law to make people pay for music encoded with that algorithm than p2p downloads.

lol yeah, default incoding when you rip with wma... no.
Best bet is to try and get them playing and then just find a program to take the drm out've them.
See what happens when you purchase music legally?

Smudge:

You are to the keyboard as windows media audio is to music, legal or otherwise.

see new topic jfw with IE 7, for comments on the above. what i did say now i have IE 6 re installed was...
have certainly found programmes that will remove DRM, but sadly none i have seen yet offer much for jfw to work with. wma converter works and i can selct the files to convert, but no access to any other menus.
